MANILA, Philippines — Typhoon Marce (international name: Yinxing) might cause a storm surge within the next 48 hours in the low-lying coastal areas in Northern Luzon, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) warned on Wednesday.

During the 11 a.m. briefing, Pagasa Assistant Weather Services Chief Christopher Perez said the storm surge warning covers Batanes, Cagayan, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, and Isabela.

An estimated storm surge of 2.1 to 3 meters may be expected in the following areas:

“As much as possible, coastal communities should avoid staying near the shore or evacuate to higher ground or designated evacuation centers. All maritime activities should be canceled for the next two to three days,” Perez said in Filipino.

He also advised residents to stay vigilant and monitor Pagasa updates for any risk or hazard posed by the typhoon.

Marce was last spotted 305 kilometers (km) east of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan, or 315 km east of Aparri, Cagayan. It was packing maximum sustained winds of 150 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gusts of up to 185 kph.
