The sun, like anything in moderation, has its wonderful benefits—better sleep, a healthy immune system, an elevated mood, and stronger bones to name a few. Too much of it (like those who love to tan) and you risk predisposition to premature aging. The latter gives me the chills.
Since I enjoy the sun—while I am that girl who loves the beach and prefers to sit alfresco—I am also one to like taking care of my skin. I may be a very hardheaded person, but after maturity and gaining some healthy self-awareness—and not to mention, becoming a little skin-conscious, I’ve learned to find a middle ground between my love for being under the sun and taking care of my skin.
Though I am my dermatologists’ nightmare, I see them as my skin ally. I regularly get monthly hydra facials at Belo, and daily, I have secret weapons that allow me to enjoy life exposed to the sun while protecting my skin from aging prematurely.

Heliocare 360º gel oil-free SPF 50 | Photo by Ria PrietoThe first time I was introduced to Heliocare, I was in Carrefour in Sotogrande. I forgot to bring any SPF and my friend said this was a must-try brand. Try I did, and I was so happy with the product that the next day, I asked to be dropped off so I could hoard some for Manila.

It reduces skin redness and helps protect against hyperpigmentation, keeping my skin flawless. Cellular damage ages skin fast and the pills also work to prevent it by acting as a barrier against the sun’s harmful rays.
Additionally, I apply Heliocare SPF 50 daily, and it goes well under makeup too. It is lightweight, protects against UVA and UVB, and is supercharged with antioxidants such as vitamin C and E plus green tea extract. Not to mention, it also has DNA repair enzymes.
There is nothing like hiding from the sun to keep your skin at its best—that’s the hard truth. But, I want to be able to enjoy and live life fully. For me, not having the sun gets in the way of having beautiful experiences. So I just learned how to combat its harmful effects, the best I know how.
